Understanding the condition
What is a plantar wart?
A plantar wart is a growth on the sole of the foot caused by a virus. The virus gets into the skin through small cuts or breaks, and it thrives in warm, moist places such as communal showers. On weight-bearing areas of the foot, plantar warts can cause sharp, burning pain.
Plantar warts are more common in children and teens than in adults.
Common signs
- A rough, hard patch on the bottom of the foot, often flat rather than raised
- Tiny dark pinpoints in the center of the patch
- Pain or tenderness when standing, walking or pressing on the spot
- Gray or brown color, with well-defined edges
Plantar warts are often mistaken for corns or calluses, but a wart is a viral infection.
When to have it checked
When should a podiatrist look at a plantar wart?
The American Academy of Dermatology lists these reasons to see a doctor:
- A wart that is changing, hurts, itches, burns or bleeds
- At-home treatment that has not cleared the wart
- Many warts
- Doubt about whether it is a wart
- Diabetes or a weakened immune system
Self-treatment with over-the-counter wart medications should be avoided by people with diabetes or circulatory disorders.
Pearl Foot & Ankle is not an emergency service. For a medical emergency, call 911.
Common plantar wart treatments
How are plantar warts treated?
The choice of treatment depends on health, age, the type of wart and other considerations.
Treatments in general use
Salicylic acid
Applied once a day after softening the wart.
Cryosurgery
Treatment may be repeated every 2 to 4 weeks, and most patients need more than one treatment.
Cantharidin
A medication containing cantharidin may be used to treat plantar warts.
Minor surgical removal
Warts can be removed by a simple surgical procedure under local anesthetic.
Some treatments take more than one session.
