What is Bunion Treatment?
A bunion is a bony bump that forms at the joint where your big toe meets your foot. It develops slowly — the big toe gradually drifts toward the second toe, and the joint itself widens and pushes outward. By the time most patients come to see us, they’re not asking what’s happening; they’re asking how to make it stop hurting.
If you’re in Portland or Beaverton and your shoes are getting tight on the inside of your foot, you have visible pressure or redness at the joint, the area aches after walking, or the pain is starting to interrupt your day — it’s a bunion, and it doesn’t get better on its own.
The good news: bunions are treatable at every stage, and the earlier we evaluate it, the more options you have. Many of the patients we see in Portland and Beaverton resolve their pain without surgery.
How Pearl Treats Bunion Treatment
We treat in stages, starting with the least-invasive option that gives you relief. Most patients don’t need surgery.
Conservative Care (First-Line)
Custom orthotics, footwear modifications, padding, anti-inflammatory protocols, and joint-protective taping. For mild-to-moderate bunions caught early, conservative care manages symptoms for years and sometimes for life. We fabricate orthotics in-office at both our Portland and Beaverton locations.
Injectable Therapy
For inflammation that doesn’t respond to conservative care, targeted injections can reduce joint swelling and pain. This is a bridge therapy — it buys time and reduces pain so you can decide whether surgery is right for you on your timeline.
Minimally Invasive Bunion Surgery (MIS)
When surgery is the right answer, we offer minimally invasive bunion correction — small incisions, faster recovery, immediate weight-bearing in most cases, and a return to normal shoes typically within 6 weeks. Our surgeons trained at leading bunion programs in the country and perform these procedures weekly.
Lapiplasty 3D Bunion Correction
For bunions where the bone has rotated, the Lapiplasty procedure addresses all three planes of the deformity — not just the bump. It’s a more durable correction with a lower recurrence rate. Pearl is among a small number of Portland-area practices certified to perform Lapiplasty.

What to Expect at Your First Visit
Your first visit at Pearl is a 30–45 minute appointment focused on understanding what’s actually causing your symptoms and giving you a clear, written treatment plan.
We’ll start with a thorough conversation about your history — when the pain started, what makes it worse, what you’ve already tried, and what your goals are. From there, your provider performs a clinical exam of the affected foot and the contributing structures (gait, alignment, range of motion, sensation, circulation). If imaging is needed, we have on-site digital X-ray at both Portland and Beaverton — most patients leave with imaging completed and reviewed in the same visit.
Once we have the diagnosis confirmed, we walk through your options. Conservative care first when it’s the right answer. Injectable or advanced therapies when conservative care has been exhausted. Surgical consultation only when surgery is the appropriate next step. You leave with a written plan, a clear understanding of next steps, and timing for any follow-up.
No high-pressure pitch. No selling treatments you don’t need. The goal of your first visit is for you to walk out of Pearl knowing exactly what’s wrong and exactly what we’re going to do about it.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will I need bunion surgery?
Most patients we see don’t end up needing surgery. We start conservative and only escalate if your symptoms aren’t responding. You and your provider make that decision together — it’s your foot, your timeline.
How long is recovery from bunion surgery?
It depends on the procedure. Minimally invasive bunion surgery: most patients are walking in a surgical shoe within 6 weeks. Traditional open surgery: 8–12 weeks. Lapiplasty: 6–8 weeks for most patients.
Does insurance cover bunion treatment?
Most insurance plans cover bunion evaluation and conservative care. Surgical coverage depends on your specific plan and whether the bunion is causing functional limitation. We verify your coverage in advance.
Do you treat bunions in Beaverton?
Yes. Both our Portland office (1827 NE 44th Ave) and our Beaverton office (12672 NW Barnes Rd) provide full bunion evaluation, conservative care, and surgical consultation.
Will my bunion come back after surgery?
Recurrence rates depend on the procedure used and how well the underlying bone alignment is corrected. Procedures like Lapiplasty that address the 3D rotation of the bone have the lowest recurrence rates.
How soon can you see me?
We hold same-week appointments for new patients with bunion pain at both Portland and Beaverton locations. Call us or book online.
What does the first appointment look like?
A 30–45 minute evaluation including a clinical exam, on-site X-ray, a discussion of your goals, and a written treatment plan you take home. No high-pressure pitch for surgery — most first visits end with a conservative care plan.
Can I just get orthotics for my bunion?
Yes. If you’ve been told a bunion is the source of your pain and you want to start with custom orthotics, we can do an evaluation and fabricate orthotics in the same visit. Most insurance plans cover at least part of the cost.
